WAKEFIELD Business Improvement District (BID) has welcomed the £5million investment into the Ridings Shopping Centre by its owners which will boost the city’s shopping offer.

Purchased by NewRiver REIT in November 2016, the Ridings has adapted a new philosophy which incorporates a physical rebrand, with internal and external refurbishments, plus improvements to customer services, in a bid to improve the overall experience.

NewRiver has invested £250k in new toilets and baby facilities, ensuring the best quality for shoppers throughout the shopping centre.

A further £750k investment has seen the opening of new food and drink space, The Garden Kitchen, offering a contemporary open-plan space for shoppers of all ages to eat, drink and relax. A licensed Tree Bar selling wines and craft beers and a supervised play area, The Den, are also set to open in spring/summer 2018.

Centre Director, Lee Appleton said: “With such a variety of shops, places to eat and upcoming events, The Ridings Centre can offer what cannot be accessed online."

New River and the management team at The Ridings know we have to add real value for our existing retailers and attract new ones in for shoppers. New additions include our Pop Up Shop, giving small independent traders a platform to sell within a high footfall area and kick-start their business in a sustainable shopping environment."

“We have also created a new multi-purpose events space, we’re planning a new market area on All Saints Walk (our lower mall) and we’re also opening our customer service lounge in summer 2018."

“Thanks to the NewRiver Retail’s investment, we can support our existing traders more than ever,” he added.

Wakefield BID manager, Elizabeth Murphy said: “It’s great to see such a pivotal shopping centre investing in Wakefield and helping the city become a more welcoming and attractive place and a great place to do business.”
