An elf station, reindeer rodeo, snowboard simulator, stilt-walkers and interactive brass bands are all set to descend on Wakefield city centre in two days of free fun.

Led by Wakefield BID – the city centre’s business improvement district company – visitors can elf themselves on Saturday December 8 with free festive makeovers for kids and adults on the Bull Ring plus chances to win by following a city centre trail featuring mini-giveaways and a grand prize for one lucky winner.

The elf station will see shoppers given a free elf hat, collar and rosy red cheek face paint all for free. The famous Frumptarn Brass Band will provide roving live entertainment with three performances in different parts of the city centre throughout the day.

There will also be a cheeky elf and snowman doing some impromptu street performances around the city centre for festive photo opportunities.

Then on Saturday December 15 there will be a free reindeer rodeo experience near the cathedral on the precinct alongside a free snowboard simulator for shoppers to enjoy and compete against each other, too.

Live entertainment will also be provided from Back Chat Brass Band with a series of rousing shows in different city centre locations.

Wakefield BID has also invested in the popular new shooting star Christmas sculpture on the gateway to the city centre near Kirkgate in a five-year festive deal alongside the installation of several trees on streets not usually covered by the wider festive decorations.

Elizabeth Murphy, Manager of Wakefield BID, said: “Our businesses want us to promote the city centre as a lively destination to shop, eat, drink and have fun. These events form part of the wider plan to reposition Wakefield city centre as a must-visit destination over the coming months and years.

“They are just a taste of what we hope is to come and are something we will build on. It’s a city centre full of surprises with some amazing businesses ranging from unique independents to international retailers, so all the bases are covered for people wanting to visit to shop for Christmas and enjoy some free entertainment – and make a whole day of it.”
