Wakefield is a growing and vibrant city with a strong community of independent retailers, hospitality venues and national brands. With so many people living, working and visiting here every day, it’s vital that businesses are equipped to deal with the challenges that come with a busy city centre. One of those challenges is counterfeit banknotes.
Counterfeit notes can cause serious problems for businesses — from direct financial losses to damaging customer trust. They often circulate quickly, and once a fake note is accepted, it can’t be reclaimed through the banking system.
Supporting Wakefield Businesses
Wakefield BID is working with the Bank of England to make sure local businesses have the tools and knowledge they need to spot counterfeit notes and protect themselves.
Through the Banknote Checking Scheme, we’ve secured free training packs and materials that are now available for Wakefield BID members. These resources are designed to help:
- Train staff to confidently check banknotes at the point of sale.
- Ensure teams know what to do if they’re handed a counterfeit note.
- Keep businesses up to date with the latest information on banknote security.
Businesses can collect their pack from the BID office or, if it’s easier, the BID team can drop them off directly at your premises.
“Counterfeit notes are a preventable risk — and something simple like this can make a real difference. We’re making it as easy as possible for our members to access these resources, whether that’s picking them up from the office or having them delivered. By working together, we can protect businesses, build confidence and keep Wakefield safe.”
