When Wakefield’s city centre Post Office closed, people noticed.
Following a strong local campaign to retain a central branch, Wakefield has officially welcomed back a Post Office in the city centre – now open at its new location on The Springs in Wakefield city centre. And importantly, this isn’t just a replacement… it’s a clear signal that when people speak up about what matters in Wakefield, it’s heard.
The official opening, marked by MP Simon Lightwood, celebrates the return of a service that residents, those working in the city centre, and visitors rely on every day. Access to a centrally located Post Office isn’t a ‘nice to have’ – it’s a vital part of a functioning, accessible city centre.
Why This Matters for Wakefield
The closure of the previous branch left a noticeable gap. For many, especially those without easy access to transport, it disrupted routine services that underpin daily life.
This reopening does more than restore convenience. It reinforces something bigger:
- That Wakefield city centre continues to evolve based on real need
- That collaboration between community, stakeholders and decision-makers can drive outcomes
- That essential services still have a place at the core of our high street
From a BID perspective, this is exactly the kind of outcome we advocate for – a city centre that works for everyone.
Services Available at Wakefield Post Office
For anyone wondering what’s available at the new branch, customers can expect a full range of Post Office services, including:
- Everyday banking – cash withdrawals, deposits and cheque handling
- Parcel services – including Royal Mail, Parcelforce, DPD and Evri drop-off and collections
- Bill payments and top-ups
- Passport and identity services – including Check & Send and document verification
- Travel services – foreign currency, travel insurance and travel money cards
This means individuals can once again access essential services right in the city centre, without needing to travel further afield.
A Warm Welcome Back
Wakefield Postmaster Jas Kaur, who brings a wealth of experience to the role, shared her thoughts on the reopening
“Customers are delighted that we can offer vital Post Office services in the Wakefield city centre again. My great team of staff are busy getting to know customers and I’m also reaching out to local businesses to let them know what services we offer, and we have longer, more convenient, opening hours than the banks.”

A City That Listens
Perhaps the most important takeaway isn’t just that the Post Office is back – it’s how it came back.
This was the result of a collective voice. Residents, businesses and stakeholders made it clear that this service mattered, and that message translated into action.
As a BID, we’re proud to have supported and amplified that conversation. It’s a strong reminder that when we work together as a city, we can shape the future of Wakefield in a way that reflects the needs of the people who live, work and visit here.
