Footfall Holds Steady as Wakefield Heads Into Summer

Wakefield city centre welcomed over 1.4 million visitors in May 2025 — holding steady despite the usual post-Easter slowdown and setting a positive tone as the summer season begins.

Year-to-date figures now stand at over 7 million, up 1.3% compared to this time last year. While May often brings a dip following the Easter holidays, the continued strength in footfall shows that Wakefield is still drawing people in — and giving them reasons to stay.

A Growing Mix of Local and Destination Visitors

Most visitors still come from within three miles of the city centre, but May also saw a 30% increase in those travelling from over 25 miles away. That growth in reach is a positive sign for the city’s wider appeal.

On top of that, both dwell time and repeat visits are on the rise — with the average stay now lasting 51 minutes. It’s a clear signal that people are spending more time exploring, shopping, eating out, and enjoying the city centre experience.

Insight for Business Planning

We also saw an uplift in high-spending visitors, particularly from postcode areas WF2 and S6. For retail, hospitality and service businesses, these kinds of insights can help inform everything from promotions to product planning.

“Seeing Wakefield’s footfall holding firm — and even growing in some areas — is a great sign of resilience and momentum,” said Thomas Wales, Chief Executive of Wakefield BID. “We know there’s still work to do, but the fact that more people are coming into the city, staying longer, and coming back again is something to feel encouraged by.”
