Free Parking Boost Set to Support Wakefield Businesses

Wakefield Council has confirmed plans to scrap two-hour parking charges across Wakefield and the district – a move welcomed by Wakefield BID and local businesses.

The changes, which could be in place in time for Christmas, will apply to all Council-operated off-street car parks in Wakefield city centre but also Castleford, Pontefract, Ossett, Normanton and South Elmsall.

Wakefield BID Chief Executive, Thomas Wales, said:

“One of the biggest concerns businesses raise with me is parking. Accessibility is key to a thriving city centre, and this decision is an important step forward.

I spoke with Council Leader Cllr Denise Jeffery and Deputy Leader Cllr Jack Hemingway about this earlier in the year, and I’m pleased to see it being delivered. Free parking not only removes a barrier for visitors, it also builds confidence – giving people more reason to shop local, eat out, and discover what Wakefield has to offer.”

The move comes after parking charges were reintroduced in 2023, following a period of free parking during and after the Covid pandemic. Councillors have now agreed to reintroduce the scheme in response to business and community feedback.

While free parking alone will not transform the high street, it adds to the ongoing investment in culture, events, safety and public realm that continues to shape Wakefield city centre. With a busy festive programme on the horizon, the timing of this change is set to make a real impact for businesses during the crucial Christmas trading period.

Thomas added:

“Our city already has the culture, the food, the retail, and the people to thrive. This decision adds to that offer and helps unlock even more potential for Wakefield. It’s a positive step from the Council and shows the kind of ambition we need to keep driving our city forward.”

Wakefield BID will continue to work closely with businesses, the Council and partners to ensure the city centre is vibrant, welcoming, and a destination of choice for visitors and residents alike.
