Wakefield Business Improvement District is proud to announce that it has officially joined the West Yorkshire Fair Work Charter, a regional initiative led by the Mayor of West Yorkshire to support and celebrate fair, inclusive and supportive workplaces.
The West Yorkshire Fair Work Charter brings together employers from across the region who share a commitment to creating better working environments and driving sustainable growth through fair work practices.
As an organisation representing more than 400 businesses in Wakefield city centre, Wakefield BID is committed to leading by example and supporting a culture where people and businesses can thrive.
A commitment to fair work
The Charter is built around five key pillars that define what fair work looks like in practice:
- Opportunity – opening up pathways into employment and enabling progression.
- Security – ensuring fair pay, stable contracts and safe workplaces.
- Wellbeing – supporting physical and mental health.
- Fulfilment – creating meaningful work and development opportunities.
- Employee Voice – making sure people are heard, valued and included.
By signing up to the Charter, Wakefield BID is reinforcing its commitment to fairness, inclusion and shared prosperity — principles that are essential for building a strong and resilient local economy.
“Signing up to the West Yorkshire Fair Work Charter is a practical way to show our commitment to good work and good business. It reflects our belief that fair workplaces build stronger teams and, ultimately, stronger places. We hope other employers in Wakefield will join us.”
— Thomas Wales, Chief Executive, Wakefield BID
Beyond a badge
Membership of the Charter provides Wakefield BID with access to a growing network of employers, a dedicated learning and development portal, and opportunities to join peer groups to share best practice and help shape how fair work is embedded across the region.
The Charter also offers a powerful framework for employers looking to attract and retain staff, boost productivity and strengthen their workplace culture.
Wakefield BID will be supporting the Charter’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of fair work through #FairWorkThursday, encouraging other employers across the city to consider signing up.
Fair work improves productivity, boosts morale, encourages innovation, and helps create a fairer economy for everyone.
