Wakefield BID Raises Business Concerns at Mayor’s Policing and Crime Discussion

On Tuesday 19th March, Wakefield BID Chief Executive Thomas Wales attended a public meeting with the West Yorkshire Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, representing the voice of Wakefield’s business community.

During the session, Thomas raised the issue of anti-social behaviour in Wakefield city centre — a concern frequently voiced by BID members, particularly those impacted on the high street and in the night-time economy. He asked what additional support could be provided by the Mayor’s Office to help tackle anti-social behaviour hotspots and make the city safer for both businesses and the public.

In response, Deputy Mayor Alison Lowe acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced across West Yorkshire and praised the proactive work already taking place in Wakefield. She highlighted that crime has significantly reduced in key areas of the city, with improved satisfaction reported by residents. This reflects the strong partnership work between West Yorkshire Police, Wakefield Council, and community stakeholders.

Deputy Mayor Lowe also reaffirmed her support for Wakefield, referencing her upcoming visit the following day to join Wakefield BID and partners in launching the Safer Wakefield initiative on 20th March. The scheme includes a new radio network connecting local businesses with each other and the police to improve real-time communication and rapid incident reporting.

Other initiatives funded or supported by the Mayor’s Office and praised during the discussion included:

  • Ask for Angela: A safeguarding scheme helping vulnerable individuals seek help discreetly in licensed venues.
  • WalkSafe app: Empowering the public with real-time safety information.
  • Safe Spaces: Providing safe locations for anyone feeling at risk during a night out.

“It was great to be part of this important discussion and to see the positive results from the hard work taking place across Wakefield. We’re seeing real progress thanks to the strong partnerships between West Yorkshire Police, the Mayor’s Office, Wakefield Council, and Wakefield BID. Initiatives like Safer Wakefield are already making a difference, and we’re proud to be working together to create a safer, more welcoming city centre for everyone.”
Thomas Wales, Chief Executive, Wakefield BID
