Wakefield Safe Point launches to support the nighttime economy

A new Safe Point has launched in Wakefield city centre, providing immediate welfare and medical support for people enjoying nights out across the city.

Funded by Wakefield’s Community Safety Partnership, the Safe Point is a converted ambulance offering a safe, non-judgemental space for anyone who is vulnerable, unwell, injured, intoxicated or separated from friends. It operates on Fridays, Saturdays and Bank Holidays from 10:30pm–5:30am, based on Westgate.

The Safe Point acts as a first-response welfare unit, helping reduce unnecessary pressure on emergency services by offering on-the-spot care, alongside practical support such as phone charging, water and a quiet place to recover before getting home safely.

Working alongside Safer Wakefield

The launch of the Safe Point strengthens the work already taking place through Safer Wakefield, the business-led safety partnership delivered by Wakefield BID.

Through Safer Wakefield, city centre businesses are connected via a live radio network and intelligence-sharing system, allowing concerns to be shared quickly between venues, security teams and partners. The Safe Point adds an important welfare and medical response to this network, ensuring issues identified through radios or intelligence can be dealt with promptly and appropriately on the ground.

Thomas Wales, Chief Executive of Wakefield BID, said:

“The Safe Point is a really important addition to Wakefield’s nighttime economy. Through Safer Wakefield, our businesses are already connected via a live radio and intelligence-sharing network, and this builds on that work by providing a clear welfare and medical response when it’s needed most.

It’s about early intervention, partnership working and making sure people feel safe and supported while enjoying Wakefield at night.”

Get involved with Safer Wakefield

Wakefield BID continues to work closely with partners to support a safer, more confident and inclusive nighttime economy. Businesses can play a key role by joining Safer Wakefield, accessing the radio network, sharing intelligence and helping shape a coordinated response to safety issues in the city centre.
