Wakefield Business Improvement District (BID) has once again teamed up with Wakefield College to bring a splash of colour to the heart of the city as part of this year’s Wakefield in Bloom.
Earlier this week, horticulture students from Wakefield College rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in planting vibrant flowers and greenery around the Bull Ring, transforming the space into a bright and welcoming focal point for the city centre.
This project sits within the wider Wakefield Horticultural Partnership – a collective effort between Wakefield BID, Wakefield College, Friends of CHaT Parks and First Impressions garden centre in Ackworth – aimed at enhancing green spaces and encouraging community involvement across the city.
Thomas Wales, Chief Executive of Wakefield BID, said:
“It’s brilliant to see students helping shape the place they live and study. This kind of partnership brings genuine pride to our city. It’s not just about making things look better – it’s about giving people a reason to care about their surroundings.”

Richard Brown, Lecturer in Horticulture at Wakefield College, added:
“Projects like this give students real hands-on experience while connecting them with their community. They’re not just learning about horticulture – they’re learning teamwork, leadership, and what it means to contribute to something bigger.”

And there’s more to come. Over the coming weeks, Wakefield BID will be expanding its city-wide planting programme, with more hanging baskets and planters set to appear throughout the city centre – making this year’s Wakefield in Bloom the biggest yet.
Together, we’re growing something special in Wakefield – and we’re only just getting started.
