You’d often smell the chestnuts before you saw him.
Then there he was – Allan Jones, stood proudly by his cart, chatting away with a grin and a twinkle in his eye. For decades, Allan was a familiar figure in the heart of Wakefield. To most, he was simply The Chestnut Man. But to many, he was far more than that – a local legend.
Allan made his pitch by the Bull Ring his own. Come rain or shine, he’d be there with his roasted chestnuts and his trademark banter, brightening up the city centre with old-school jokes and his unmistakable Yorkshire charm. He wasn’t just a trader; he was part of the rhythm of Wakefield, a friendly face that helped shape the personality of our city.
Behind the humour was a deeply kind man – especially when it came to animals. Allan had a soft spot for rescue dogs, and over the years he gave many of them loving homes. It’s no surprise that the community has spoken of him with such affection since his passing earlier this year, aged 72.
To honour Allan’s legacy, Wakefield BID has dedicated a plaque in his memory, now in place on a tree close to where he used to trade. It’s a simple gesture, but one that reflects the respect and warmth felt for someone who gave so much to Wakefield in his own unique way.
“Allan was one of those characters you don’t forget. He brought life, laughter, and love for animals into our city centre. This plaque is a tribute from the business community and from Wakefield itself – to say thank you.”
— Thomas Wales, Chief Executive, Wakefield BID
We invite anyone who knew Allan – whether through a quick chat while buying chestnuts, a shared laugh, or a walk with the dogs – to visit the spot and take a moment to remember him.
Allan reminded us all that it’s the people who give a place its heart. And Wakefield’s heart is certainly a little warmer for having known him.
